Smith Mountain Lake is brimming with activity, particularly during the warmer months of the year. Living on or near the lake means lots of boating, water sports, and lounging by the water with family and friends. One popular destination is the Smith Mountain Lake National Park, which provides hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, a public beach and boat ramp, fishing dock, and more! The Smith Mountain Lake Community Park also offer a public beach, picnic area, playground, and fishing docks.

The SML community has scheduled events planned throughout the year including the Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival, a craft beer and cider festival called Brews and Tunes, and the Fall Chili and Craft Festival.

Bridgewater Plaza, one of the most popular meeting spots on the lake, is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment including karaoke, arcade, and mini golf. Westlake Towne Center is also comprised of many local shops and eateries. Crossing Halesford Bridge will bring you to Downtown Moneta, a beautiful development that’s home to many local shops and restaurants.

About the Lake

If you’ve ever visited Smith Mountain Lake, then you know just how easy it is to fall in love with “the Jewel of the Blue Ridge.” Covering 500 miles of shoreline, Smith Mountain Lake combines all of the luxuries of resort living with casual southern charm. It’s a place where you can go canoeing in the afternoon and have a gourmet dinner at night, all while surrounded by a picture-perfect postcard setting.

While the area itself is relatively new in terms of development, the relaxed atmosphere has an air of familiarity that makes you feel right at home. While there are a few franchised businesses throughout the area, Smith Mountain Lake is comprised mostly of local businesses. Traffic is simple and leisurely, the people are friendly and welcoming, and the view is always spectacular.

Local Communities

Smith Mountain Lake covers three counties: Franklin, Bedford, and Pittsylvania. Amtrak stations are located in both Roanoke and Lynchburg and have multiple schedules departing to and from major metropolitan cities including Washington, DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, and New York. Regional airports are located in both Roanoke and Lynchburg with connecting flights to Greensboro, Charlotte, Washington, DC, Dulles, and various locations in Florida including Daytona Beach, Tampa, and Orlando.
